Happy Birthday Katherine!

Once we finished our meeting in the town hall it was time to wish Katherine "Happy Birthday" with a special Spanish birthday cake and a few rounds of "Happy birthday in Spanish.

We then returned to school for an official welcome from the Head teacher and school choir who sang a few songs including "Happy Birthday" to Katherine! She also received another cake.

Thursday 21st November - Our first full day in Valladolid!

Students had an early morning as school starts at 8am here in Valladolid. 

Students joined their partners for the first two lessons of the morning. We then all met up in the library and had a quick snack in the school bar, before getting on a bus to the centre of Valladolid.

We had an appointment in Valladolid town hall where we were met by the mayor´s assistant ( unfortunately the mayor had to go out!!) and had a tour of this very impressive building. We were allowed out on the balcony and then into the "Salon de plenos"!

We arrived at the Spanish school IES Galileo at 6.30pm Spanish time and after lots of hugs and kisses everyone went home with their partners to catch up!

Spanish exchange students leave for Valladolid

Bright and early Wednesday morning 27 excited students met in the cold and the rain ready to meet their Spanish partners once again. Despite warnings about suitcase size Mr. Quintana, Natalia and Mrs Metcalfe were surprised at the size of some cases!! Winners of the biggest cases were Alice Bacon, Samantha and Jasmine Carter whilst Simone Hinzman definitely won the prize for heaviest case and had to smile sweetly at Easy Jet staff when checking in her case!! Once at Gatwick students busied themselves shopping, reading, eating and drinking until our flight was called.  

Irie Révoltés - Concert in London

On the 5th of November, Tomlinscote students enjoyed a trip to London to watch Irie Révoltés live at a club! The band from Heidelberg sing in French and German about social injustice and politics - and they rock! The trip was organised by the Goethe Institute as part of their joint venture with the Institut Francais.Vielen Dank & merci for making it possible!

Here's what Neemah Wright (year 12) has to say about the night:

 

"Irie Révoltés are a band that combines Reggae, Ska, Hip Hop, Rock and Pop with punchy bass lines, powerful drums and catchy lyrics.

The 9 piece band uses conventional 'rock' instruments as well as synths and brass instruments to create an amazing 'live' sound as well as delivering a unique and unheard aspect of sound to the genre. The band gets the audience involved and carry a great energy with them, which also helps the audience to dance and 'mosh-pit' to their songs.

Being able to watch them play live was an amazing experience especially as the trip was already paid for by the Goethe institute. If you ever have the chance to see them, take it!"

German weather reports in primary feeder school

Staying at our feeder school Ravenscote, here is some fantastic work produced by Frau Mahler's year 6 classes. Having learned to talk about the weather, pupils had to give a weather report in German.

European Day of Languages

Remember the European Day of Languages Competition?
Here are some winning entries from our feeder junior school Ravenscote.
The overall winner of years 3 to 6 was Joshua Mills in 5B with two poems about languages!

Congratulations to the all the winners -who have received some sweets and goodies, and especially to fabulous 5B, who have shown particular enthusiasm for this task with 47 entries (winning them some German sweets)!

French Exchange 2013: Paris

Today started with an early 8.00AM gathering in order to head for Paris. After a peaceful journey down, during which students exchanged stories and anecdotes from the weekend, we arrived just in time for lunch!

Once refueled, we started to walk up the famous Champs Elysées avenue (and past a certain Abercrombie store, which seemed to catch the attention of most of our girls????), ready to face the 284 steps up to the top of the Arc de Triomphe.

Thanks to some encouragement and support (even a push?) from Miss Streeter, all students made it alive!
Unexpectedly, the weather ended up being on our side and our official photographer let her talent out.

 

 

 

Students were then given some free time to roam the most famous avenue in the world (including the psychedelic Mercedes showroom) and we met up with them near the Abercrombie store (again?).

Our coach driver gave students a chance to tour the city and capture the most famous landmarks (Eiffel Tower, Le Louvre museum, the Assemblée Nationale palace (French Parliament), Concorde square, Académie Française, etc.) before we headed back to Lille for the last night with families.
