HSBC/British Council Mandarin Speaking Competition 2015

Grace Cubin in Year 9 represented Tomlinscote school in this year’s Southern Regional Heat of the HSBC/BC Mandarin Chinese Speaking Competition, which took place on 4th December 2015 at the British Council.

Grace was asked to prepare a two minute presentation in Mandarin on a topic from the curriculum, e.g family and friends, school, home and pets, leisure time, festivals, etc. The judges then asked her two questions in Mandarin relating to her presentation and to translate three sentences from Mandarin into English.

Well done Grace!

Voilà une nouvelle chanson qui passe sur les ondes. Elle plaira sans aucun doute à mes collègues ;)

Bon courage, et bonnes vacances!

Marina Kaye est une chanteuse française très jeune. Elle a 17 ans. Elle a une très belle voix. Cette chanson passe beaucoup à la radio.

J'espère que ça vous plait!

Tomlinscote School has been selected to enter an international competition, Juvenes Translatores, which is an annual translation contest for 17-year old students around the European Union. The competition is aimed at supporting the EU’s own motto: Europeans are to be 'united in diversity'. Our school has been extremely lucky to be granted a place in this year’s competition amongst another 72 important and recognised educational institutions in the UK.

Studies show the ever-growing need for translation and translators in Europe and therefore it is useful for language students to be prepared for this. Juvenes Translatores raises awareness of the importance of translation skills and the need to reassess translation — as a means of ‘mediating’ between languages — in the context of language learning. This year's theme was the European Year for Development.

Louise McGaffney in 12S and Bruce Robinson in 13Q represented our school in the 2015 contest, translating from French into English. The competition took place on Thursday 26th November under exam conditions. Both students made us proud for the effort and commitment. Translations have been submitted and we cannot wait until we hear the results in February 2016. ‘Bon Chance’ to both!

If you would like to find out more about this exciting event please have a look at this link:

German Careers Fair 2015

On Monday 2nd November a group of nine students from Year 11 travelled to London together with Mrs Sparkes to attend the German Careers Fair at the London School of Economics (LSE).
The event was organised jointly by the German Embassy and the German-British Chamber of Industry & Commerce in an exclusive collaboration with the LSE this year, and was aimed at school pupils, university students and graduates.
Our students had the opportunity to meet representatives of German companies as well as British companies with important business links to German speaking countries, such as Bayer, Bentley Motors, BMW, Lidl, E.ON, Siemens, The European Commission, LSE German Society, BSH, MINI and the Goethe Institute.

Languages at Work day

On Wednesday 21st October, 12 Tomlinscote students identified by their teachers as able in Modern Foreign Languages were given the opportunity to attend the Languages at Work day at Wellington College.  The event enabled them to speak directly to people who use language skills to great advantage in their work, such as representatives from Conversis, GCHQ, Symantec, a Japanese teacher from UCL and Chris Dennis, multilingual sports broadcaster for the BBC and Eurosport. It also allowed them to understand the importance of communication in business and to enjoy the opportunity of networking with young people similar to themselves.

Although the five workshops examined language skills in the workplace from different perspectives, they provided a wonderfully clear vision of their importance.

All 12 students really impressed with their ability in the languages involved, their confidence, willingness to participate and desire to know more. Well done!
