Congratulations to Hanifah Hashim-Subhan, Jasmine Carter and Samantha Carter (all in year 12) who entered the Goethe-Institut video competition for 14-19 year old students, entitled 'Sport ist mein Leben' (sport is my life).
They produced a 3 minute film in German explaining netball, a sport unknown in Germany (where handball is much more popular).
We are delighted to announce that the girls have won the UK part of the contest and will soon receive their first prize in the post, a pair of Beats headphones each!
Well done to the girls and thank you to the Goethe Institut for this opportunity!
Follow the link below to see our video and the winning entries from Sweden and Denmark. You can vote which one you like best - the overall winners are sent on a weekend trip to Berlin!!

Mandarin Speaking Competition
6 students from Year 8 and 9 worked really hard and successfully got to the first round.
On Monday 9th December, with a great deal of excitement and a very early start, they travelled up to London (accompanied by their Chinese teacher) to perform in front of students from 14 other schools (and the judges, of course).
We hope to hear whether they have reached the final very soon.

WOW! What a day, from the early start with
feelings of nervousness to the excitement of knowing we were competing for the
chance of a place in the finals, and if successful an amazing visit to China.
We all met bright and early at the Farnborough train station and made our way
to London to perform at the Bloomsbury theatre. On arrival we weighed up the
competition groups from all over the country. It was hard to tell as each group
presented with such high standard; finally the time came for our performance.
We surely gave it our all and felt confident that we had
excelled. Only time will tell whether we go through to the finals or not!...
fingers crossed!

Participating in the HSBC Mandarin Speaking competition has
improved my understanding of both the Chinese language and culture – from the
scripts we received, I have managed to pick up some new vocabulary that we
hadn’t covered yet in our lessons. Also, our script, like all the other
entries, had contained a plot surrounding a certain part of Chinese culture (In
our case it was about how boys are the favourites of grandparents) and it was
interesting to see the contrast between British and Chinese family life. For
days, I had practiced my lines, listening back to an audio tape to perfect my
tones and accent – when I learn new vocabulary now, I have more confidence in
trying to say things I’m not familiar with. Overall, the speaking competition
was a great experience for me to learn more about the language and the culture
behind it, and I’d recommend anyone to take up more opportunities like this in
the future.

Eurpean Day of Languages 2013 - Poem-Poster Competition
The 26th of September is the European Day of Languages!
People all over Europe -and in Tomlinscote - celebrate our cultural and linguistic diversity: If we all spoke the same language and had the same culture, it would be very boring! Imagine life and your language without pizza, croissant, hamburger, cafeteria, restaurant, kindergarten, and so on. It's wonderful we are all different and can give new ideas and words to one another. To learn a language is to be able to communicate with more people, to open up the world for travel and multiply your career opportunities. It is to find out about other cultures and learn from them, and to broaden your horizon. You become cleverer as you train your brain in coping with another grammar and feed it with more vocabulary! And of course, it's lots of fun!
Competition
We would like you to write
a poem (rhyming, acrostic, a sonnet, a two-liner)
about languages (why are they important? what is great about them?)
and create a poster with it! (make it visually stunning!)
You can see some fabulous examples below (winners from a previous competition).
You can work on your own, with a partner or even get help from home!
Hand in your word to the MFL office or your language teacher (make sure your name is on the back)!
The deadline is the 4th of October 2013!
Great prizes to be won!
Good luck! Viel Glück! Bonne Chance! Buona suerte!

Student of the Month - June 2013: Winner of Oxford German Competition
This month's Star Student is
Isobel Leigh
for her amazing success in the Oxford German Network Olympiad!
The theme was Grimm's fairy tales (as it had been the 200th anniversary of their publication this year), and Isobel chose to make a short film about Schneewittchen (Snow white).
We are very proud to announce that she is the WINNER in the film category for Year 10 -11, having beaten entrants from all over the UK. Isobel was invited to attend a ceremony at the Bodleian Library in Oxford a few days ago to celebrate her success!
What a wonderful achievement!
I asked Isobel to write a bit about the whole experience in German:
