French exchange - we're back!
Despite industrial action that caused traffic chaos around Lille and delayed our departure, we were back to Tomlinscote only 20 minutes later than expected.
Miss Barnes, Miss Menon, Matthieu Fontaine, Mr Daullet and I would like to congratulate the student party for their behaviour throughout the trip, as well as their general approach to all aspects of the exchange.
WELL DONE! FELICITATIONS!

French exchange - 6th Form Work Experience
Our 6th Formers were given the opportunity to work as classroom assistants on the primary school site. Not only did they impress staff and students with their enthusiasm, but also with the 'incredible level of French they display' (quote from a French primary school teacher).
Looking at these shots, who would have thought they are normally on the other side of the desk?-

Unfortunately, we didn't manage to see all our 6th Formers in action but the French teachers were full of praise for Jade and George too. Apologies for not being able to show pictures of them on the blog.

French exchange - in and around Lille
French Exchange - school time
Friday and Monday, Year 9, 10 and 11 students attended lessons in the French school. Feedback ranged from 'so boring' to' we taught them how to play rounders' and 'the music teacher made us sing Adèle to the French students'!

The French teachers invariably reported on the positive attitude and contributions of the Tomlinscote students they had in their lessons. Special mention must be made of Charlotte and Amy in Year 10 who managed to complete the Maths classwork correctly before any of the French students!
All in all, the general impression seems to be that, interesting as it may be to sample for a couple of days, an eight-period day (8.00 till 5.30) is not really worth considering at Tomlinscote! There are many very tired faces going round the school at the moment.

No rest for the wicked - time to write an account of the trip so far |

French Exchange - pancake evening
On Friday night, all exchange students were given the opportunity to relax and have a good time together, whilst their teachers were busy cooking pancakes for them and serving them drinks.

Rees kindly looked after the musical side of things with a few chosen tunes that he played for the delight of everyone present. The audience thanked him with a spontaneous round of applause, as all were impressed with the skills displayed.

French Exchange - visit to Paris
Yesterday, Tomlinscote and NDP students got the opportunity to spend the whole day together as part of our day trip to Paris. It was another early start and after a 2 and a half hour coach journey which enabled British and French students to bond further, we started to discover some of the magnificent landmarks in Paris.
The coach tour of the city included the Stade de France, the Eiffel Tower, the Champs Elysées avenue, Concorde square, the Grand and Petit Palais museums, as well as the Sacré Coeur church, Louvre museum and Notre-Dame cathedral from the distance.
This tour was followed by a picnic prepared by the French families, in the pleasant surroundings of the Tuileries gardens.
Once everyone had enjoyed their lunch, we walked all the way up to the top of the Champs Elysées avenue where we found the Arc de Triomphe and the mad parisian traffic around it. We climbed to the top of the Arc de Triomphe (284 steps!!!) to make the most of the magnificent view that greeted us. This seemed to be one of the highlights of the day for many students.
The rest of the day consisted in some free (shopping?) time on the Champs Elysées and a long journey back (made worse by the traffic jams on the périphérique ring-road).
Everyone awake? Let's go! |
